Technically, the pope is the head of state over the Holy See, aka Vatican City, and would act in an administrative capacity just as any other head of state. Uniquely, though, he would also be the head of the Roman Catholic Church, which would require so much more: pastoral skills, diplomacy, anything that a pastor of a megachurch would need to be able to do, but so much more than that. The pope is not OBLIGED to do anything except preside as head of state of Vatican City, as far as I know, but I don't think anyone who is elected pope would take it lightly.
