I have heard (and read) that the 'Prophet' Mohammed married a 6 year old girl.
Surely this makes him nothing more than a paedophile?
I would be interested to hear the 'truth' from Muslims about this subject and why (if it is true) do they worship a kiddie fiddler.

**** SHADOWOFFEARS **** I was not asking about the age of consent through the ages in America. I asked if the 'Prophet' Mohammed married a 6 year old girl.
Please do not try to justify paedophillia with the argument that Jerry Lee Lewis married a 14 year old girl. People do not worship Jerry Lee Lewis or start wars or bomb planes and tube stations and busses because some of us don't like his 'music'.
I simply asked if the 'Prophet' Mohammed married a prepubescent child.

Again, Ancient Greeks having sex with boys does not answer my question. A question is designed to gain knowledge. Actions are what cause hatred, xenophobia, racism etc... The actions of many Muslims around the world are what causes hatred towards them today.
I do not think that my question regarding the 'Prophet' Mohammed's sexual tendencies towards CHILDREN will incite people to hate Muslims. The hijacking of planes, detonating bombs in tube sations and on busses will.
I actually lived in the Middle East for 13 years and never heard that the 'Prophet' Mohammed married a 6 year old girl. I wonder why?

first: it wasn't 6, it was between 8 and 12 (controversial between scholars from the dawn of islam)
second: it was something very usual in the arabic culture back then, and the proof is:
1.there was a man that already proposed to her before Muhammad (pbuh) did, but when Muhammad (pbuh) did, her father wanted the prophet (pbuh) to marry his daughter instead (her father was Abu Bakir, his closest friend, the first who believed in him and his first successor)
2. the pagan's of Mecca who fought Muhammad (pbuh) and his friends very badly didn't say anything about this event whatsoever(as if he was a child molester as you are saying) or at least use it against him although they wanted anything whatsoever to use it against him and disfigure his image to the people who was converting to islam back then
those are only two proofs only...there books and books if you are interested
so please my friend be reasonable, and remember: ask about everything you don't understand about islam and you'll find a convincing answer because we believe that our religion is absolutely perfect
i hope that i helped you
peace.....

It is anachronistic to place a moral value judgement today on something which happened centuries ago and in an entirely different culture.
For the ancient Greeks, for example, it was part of the structure of their society to have preferred sexual relations with young boys whilst marriage to a female was secondary and for procreation purposes only. This was the norm then, but of course, not today. One cannot make a judgement by today's values!
Do you know that in many cultures, marriage or the betrothal of marriage can even take place when a child is born? The marriage partner has already been decided by it's parents.
The structure of your question is designed to be offensive, racist, xenophobic, insulting and inciting - as shown by the answers of many given here. Shame on YOU.

**EDIT**
Paul G, Judging by the calibre of your previous questions one can only assume that you are a moron. You have been presented with several constructive arguments and you are foolish to disregard them. Shame on you. You are surly no academic. The direct answer to your question is no.

He married her when she was 6 and then had sex with her when she was 9. Look at all the excuses Muslims make. It just goes to show that they think Mohammed could do anything he wanted, no matter how sick or immoral it was

To put all of this in perspective-hopefully without undue apologetics-the first thing that one should be aware of is that 'Aishah was the third wife of the Prophet , not the first. Prior to this, the Prophet's first and only wife for twenty-four years was Khadijah bint al-Khuwaylid, who was about nineteen years older than him. He married Khadijah when she was forty and he was twenty-one-which might be called the years of a male's "sexual prime"-and stayed married ONLY to her until her death. Just after Khadijah's death, when he was round forty-six years old, the Prophet married his second wife Sawdah bint Zam'ah. It was after this second marriage that the Prophet became betrothed to 'Aishah, may God be pleased with her. She was the daughter of Abu Bakr, one of the Prophet's closest friends and devoted followers. Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, was one of the earliest converts to Islam and hoped to solidify the deep love that existed between himself and the Prophet by uniting their families in marriage. The betrothal of Abu Bakr's daughter 'Aishah to Muhammad , took place in the eleventh year of Muhammad's prophethood, which was about a year after he had married Sawdah bint Zam'ah and before he made his hijra (migration) to al-Madinah (Yathrib). As mentioned above, the marriage with 'Aishah bint Abu Bakr was consummated in Shawwal, which came seven months after the Prophet's hijra from Makkah to al-Medinah. At the time of his marriage to ''Aishah, the Prophet was over fifty years old.
It should be noted that the Prophet's marriage to 'Aishah was an exceedingly happy one for both parties, as the hadeeth literature attests. 'Aishah, may God be please with her, was his favourite wife and the only virgin that he ever married. After emigrating to al-Madinah, Muhammad married numerous other wives, eventually totalling fifteen in his lifetime. Even though we do not have time to go into the details of each one of them here, each of these marriages was done either for political reasons, to strengthen the ties of kinship or to help a woman in need. Quite a few of the wives were widows, older women or had been abandoned and thus were in need of a home. Additionally, it should be mentioned that the same collection of Muslim hadeeth literature that tells us that 'Aishah was only nine years old at the time of the marriage tells us that the marriage was Divinely ordained:
