Dogs have WAY more personality and character. I've had both cats and dogs. Cats have never SHOWN any significant intelligence to me, but I've had dogs that would turn on the water hose to play in the water, open doors, play games with me, etc.

Cat is probably cleverest, but i thinks dogs are more loyal and much better value.

Dogs have masters; cats have servants. Which one do YOU think is the cleverest now?

My dog is quite clever. My aunt has a cat which sits around all day doing nothing a bit like Garfield. So I'll say the dog.

Definitely dogs, they are so clever, look at all the dogs that are trained to be guide dogs, hearing dogs, dogs for the disabled, search and rescue dogs, there amazing, never seen a cat do anything like that.

I've had many of both and it really depends on the particular cat/dog you have. I've had really stupid dogs, and really smart ones(know how to open doors and drag you to things they want). Cat's I've never really noticed too big a difference in. All they do is lay there and sleep unless they're outside or in a playful mood. Not much to judge intelligence on.
One of my cats is smart in gettin food though. He sneaks up and acts all friendly to someone who he knows is getting ready to eat beforehand. That way he's already near and on the lap of them before they eat and he gets little bits of it without being pushed away for begging.

I would say they are as clever as each other but in different ways. One of our dogs can open doors and has even been known to open the front door while everyone was out! Our cats, on the other hand always know when we're about to open a tin of tuna before we've even got it out of the cupboard!!

it probably depends on the individual dog or cat, dogs have a more important role in society by working with police and the blind etc... whereas cats don't but this is not to say they are less intelligent. They normally are laid back and are weary, wheras dogs normally just act before they think.

The person who said cats are dumb, is a dumb *** for saying that. Cats are not stupid, my cat use to recognise my car and run half way up the road to greet me, they are very sensitive and have personalities. I hate it when people make sweeping statements but know nothing. As for your question, dogs can be trained to do more.
