to record, it says the disc is not empty. Do they only last so many times.

1) Do not format it with quick format. Do Format completely (Throughly)

2) Try to clean the drive with disk cleaner

3) Your Rw-Disk may have become un readable

4) Try to format the CD from another CD Writer

Probably hasn't been fully erase.

You can leave it out in the sun (just don't let it melt) for a few hours, that often works.

RW disks work onthe basis of differing densities caused by different qualities of light.

You can never get the disk back to the "standard" of a virgin disk.

The CDRW and DVDRW discs have certain number of lifecycle beyond which it stops working. This is normal and there should be no cause for worry.

However, you can try one more software to erase to make sure that the lifecycle is over.
