I want to do lunges every other day. Today I did 40 lunges on each leg with 2 kg weights. I want to increase the number of reps, not the weights. How much should I increase it by at a time. Any pointers on making my lunges more effective?

Add a few lunges every few days as you will come to point when it hurts,do this everytime you become resistant so you can build them up,then decide how much time you want to spend doing lunges. Be careful you don't make your muscles too big.

Beyond a certain point, adding more reps won't accomplish anything. Your body adapts to the weight, and unless you spend a couple of hours doing lunges, you'll stop making progress. 5 or 6 sets of 12-14 reps is the outside limit. Try increasing the weight just a bit--you won't get huge, muscle-bound legs, I promise. Also try mixing in other leg exercises, such as squats and leg extensions. It's important to mix up your workout routines to keep your body guessing.

40 lunges on one leg, i think thats more than i do, and i dont do lunges every day, its once or twice a week, especially with weights. I would say its better to do 3 sets, with 3 weights , increase the weight with each set, and decrease the reps with each set, you shud be exhausted at the end, and boy oh, its feeling i like.

If I do stationary lunges with weights I'll do 40 with each leg then I'll do push-ups then pull-ups then burpie-presses then another 40 on each leg. I do that cycle about 5 times - killer workout. If I do walking lunges I'll do about 300, 50 at a time. I use 50 pound weights (25 in each hand) as it REALLY gets your butt!
