Been there, done that. Boot camp is still meant to teach you to obey and it can be a nightmare for those that are not ready. Remember it is simply training to teach you to work together and do things without question. Food is good. After you become a seaman, things become lots easier. From boot camp you will be sent to a service school or assigned to be a deckhand...apply for a school. A schools are not too long and then you will be assigned to a duty station to use your knowledge. B schools take longer and are more difficult to enter and C schools are virtually professional training units and are for career people.....if you have any special questions, just ask and I'll answer them. While I liked the Navy very much, it was not a career choice for me...I am a physician and Navy training is excellent. (Interned at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego)

I've put some links at the bottom that talk about the Navy boot camp.

It looks like there's been some good information given here. While I'm not in the Navy, I've been living in Japan for the last three years, and I've seen a lot of young men and young women in the military (primarily Air Force, but also Navy) and so here are some other suggestions.

Pick a career field that interests you - something that you'd seriously consider doing as a career. If you're looking to stay in the Navy 20 years or more - you might want to consider a career that will help you advance through the ranks.

Personally, I'd recommend something that would put you on a ship - and give you the opportunity to travel more. True, you'll be gone from "home" a lot more - but you're young, I'm assuming you're not married, no kids or anything - so that means now is a good time to go off and do something like this.

Make the most of the time you have - meaning, put a lot of effort into your work - it will reward you later on. The first couple of ranks you should be able to advance through easily - as long as you're doing a good job. However, the higher up you start going through the ranks, the more difficult it becomes because there's always less people in the rank above you, and not everybody in your rank is going to be able to advance.

Take the opportunity to sightsee in the places you visit - see the sights, you might never get the opportunity to see some of those places again.

Volunteer whenever you get the opportunity, that's one of the things they look at when they're doing promotions.

Have fun, but be careful, especially if you drink or go out to the bar - so many problems happen when people become drunk. Since you're a woman, you have to be doubly careful so that you don't wake up in some guys bed wondering what happened.

I was in Navy for 4 years and in boot camp, I believe these are what you need to know/do the most. 1.) Make sure you are prepared for exercising (this includes running). There are limits on how many diff rent exercises you need to get through the physical part of boot camp. 2.) Try to learn some Navy history. You will have classes in boot camp on the history of the Navy. You will be tested in this catergory. Also, try to learn and remember who the President of the US is, Vice president, etc... You also might want to get a hold of the 10-12 general orders you will ave to memorize and know, will have to yell out when asked (it could be in any order) by those in charge. Navy recruiter should be able to help you out with this, good luck- Anchors away!!

I joined the Navy when I was 16 years young, and I traveled all over the world, and had too much fun. Navy means Never Again Volunteer Yourself. My advise to you is very important regarding when you get out of the Military, and that is "Always make copies of any Medical Injury, Medical problems that occurred while your were on active duty. You will need them 10-20 years when you will have to apply for a "services connected injury", and you will have to prove it with name dates, and places. Make copies have and send them to your mom for save keeping. Save any thing regarding your health. You never know. I reside in California, and I was stationed in Hawaii. I had back surgery and did not write the place I got hurt at, and now I am fighting for my "service connect injury" disability income. Other then that you are a your lady, and you will be safe. Most likely you will be based on land, not a ship. Don't worry have fun, but before you do go get baptized and get re born again in Jesus Christ. Have a safe and happy life, and journey.

Well, if you are the kind of woman that complains alot, youll be in living hell and wont go anywhere. Drama is not tolerated.
If you arent, then youll fit perfectly.
It will be completely different than it is for a man. If you suck, they treat you even more terrible, but if you are good, youll get a hell of a lot more support than a man of the same talent would.

Women who are corpsmen(medics who serve the marines, but are in the navy) are particularly respected by everybody.

Retired from the Navy after 20.5 years. Bootcamp is easy, just listen to all they tell you. What you bring into it is what you will get out of it. Things were changing alot when I got out in 92, so I cannot comment about that. Welcome to the canoe club and best of luck.

Relax. Just remember the first few weeks they'll try to play head games with you. You can do it if you just stay calm and remember everyone else went through it too.
