Aslan's answer is accurate but misses the point.

Marx was talking about religion's ability to calm the masses and keep them apathetic about the nature of their life. He meant that without religion, the masses would rise up and take what is rightfully theirs.

To a certain extent I do agree with it. I'm reminded of the centuries of American slaves who were told by their pastors that 'this life is a test' and that there would be justice in the next world for the justice they were denied in this world.

I think convincing a person of this is maybe the greatest evil (short of murder) that one human can commit against another.

if you are referring to what Karl Marx said about 'religion being the opiate of the masses' then it would be as well to see what opium was used for in the days he wrote them rather in how opium is seen today

in Marx's days he would have seen people drink opiate tea like we do a cuppa coffee at the end of a hard day and feel a little better for it
