i'm quite an accomplished cake baker, though usually i dont decorate them as they get eaten too quickly to bother, but im really interested in giving it a go. Does anyone have any good advice on books, shops, best equipment etc, to help get me started? I'm a full time mum so college isnt an option,i'll have to teach myself. Cheers!

There are a number of cake decorating books by Debbie Brown.

I can recommend them.

I usually make my children's birthday cakes myself. I can't say they look very professional, but the children get to chose what they want and it usually roughly resembles the request - they're always happy with the result!!

Try looking up a local cake decorating shop. Sounds odd, but there's a brilliant one near where I live. They sell every imaginable bit you might need to make and decorate cakes and they're always happy to give advice.

Happy baking.

I would say go to a cake specialist and ask there, you can buy already rolled icing, they cut corners just the same as we do. You can buy lots of nice bits and bobs in which to decorate them, Imagination is probably the best tool,

Other than that browse the web, there are lots of ideas there.

Wilton's sells tips, pans, kits, etc., available at your local craft store. I used to see them at department stores, I do not anymore. They have a line of books, too.
Check out Martha Steart. She has some cute ideas.
