One room at a time. Start with an inspiration piece....a picture, a pillow, a vase, an upholstery fabric, curtains. Any item you must have in that room, something you absolutely love, then build your room around that item, taking your color cues and style from that piece. For example, if you find a beautiful rug in golds, greens and reds and it is in a very modern style and pattern, you could get sleek modern furniture using colors from the rug.

I don't know your particular house or what you like, but here are a couple of ideas I've had for myself:
My front yard would be fabulous-- green grass, rose bushes of all colors, and concrete or wrought iron tables and chairs. As I enter, I'd have an entry area (a room or just a designated space) with cubbies and a counter space, hooks, a mirrior, a bench, and some nice classical touches, such as white greek busts or angels. The area would be painted a cheery pale yellow with white details or a taupe color. Next up, the living room would shake things up! Varied animal prints, realistic stuffed animals, animal figures, and framed pictures of animals would be everywhere. The walls would be bright red. The kitchen would be black and white with a royal blue border and cow prints on the walls and two restaurant style booths. The hallway would be painted burgundy and lined with honey-colored bookshelves filled with my books. A desk at the end of the hall would hold my computer and oriental prints, with small shelves for oriental figures and an oriental rug on the floor. I'd have a bathroom with walls that looked like they were stone with Egyptian hieroglyprhics, black toilet, lavatory and tub with gold faucets, and figurines that look Egyptian, as well as one of those black cat toilet brush holders. There would be a bedroom for me all done in lavender hues and plum velvet with unicorn and fairy posters, foil art prints, figurines, and stuffed stuff. The back wall would have bookshelves for journals and favorite books and writing desks below with small drawers beneath, all in white, and this would be hidden from the bed by a gray curtain decorated with faux flower vines, particularly purple and lavender flowers, and an imitation of a waterfall made of uneven strips of various blue cloths and pearly strands. If a third bedroom existed, it would be painted electric blue and used as a gym. Energizing posters of female heroes would grace the walls: Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Supergirl, and more. The room would have a Slam Man, a Total Gym, a Gazelle Elite, and an inversion table, at least, if it all fit. The laundry room would be white except for funky laundry curtains and a mural of a flower garden with birdhouses and butterflies and all covering one wall.

Or the living room and dining room could be all one place, like a movie theater where you can get meals and decorated like a theater, the bedroom could have a cherry wood four poster bed and violet walls with a plum spread, and the office could be in a bedroom with jade green walls. It's all good-- just let me have a house of my own to decorate.

Start with the ceiling of the top floor and work your way down so you don't break something while trying to decorate around the new stuff. No matter what else you do, this is the most important thing.

This is a BIG question and depends alot on what you like. Knowing nothing about your taste, I would tell you to start looking at magazines, furniture stores and model homes. Do one room at a time and start with one piece that you LOVE. For example, find a comforter that you adore and work from there with colors for the walls and accessories. Do it slowly. Add one piece at a time and remember that everything doesn't have to MATCH. In fact, it's usually boring if it does. Chose the room you use most to start and have fun. It's a journey, not a race.
