I am right handed and have the knife in my right hand like you when I use a knife, otherwise I have a fork in my right hand, I suppose it depends on who the person is and what they are used to doing. Interesting question by the way.

A table is always set with the knives on the right and the forks on the left. This is the way it was in Europe and America followed suit.
I think someday that will change in order to reflect how Americans actually use their knife and fork.
Europeans eat with two hands; they hold the knife in their right hand , the fork in their left hand and then co-ordinate the use of both of them.
Americans eat with one hand- the right one.
They will pick the knife and fork as it is layed out on the table, cut with the right , put down the knife , move the fork over to the right hand and use it that way for the rest of the meal.
Interesting

In the western cuisine, the food served on the table is usually
with forks, knives and spoons. Depending on the type of food ordered, the waiter of a restaurant will provide you with the right cutlery to use.
Irrespective of whether you're left or right handed, you should take the knife in the right hand and with your left hand, the fork when you're having a grilled steak with boiled potatoes for your lunch. This is table manners for eating the right way.

I am left handed and use a fork in my left and knife in my right. However, if I am chopping something, I use the knife in my left. I also use a spoon in my left hand.
I guess it depends on whatever way you feel comfortable.
When I was a baby, my parents always put a spoon in my right hand and I would move it to the left hand before eating!

I'm do the same as you (I'm American) but my husband always keeps his knife in his right hand and his fork in his left with the prongs down (he's British). I have noticed many other Brits and people on the Continent doing the same. Maybe you and I are both wrong?

Haha, personally I prefer to use a knife with my right hand (i'm right handed) because it's my stronger hand and I can cut better and with more control that way. Otherwise I use my fork in my right hand (when eating spaghetti or something).

Correct etiquette would be to have the knife in the right hand and the fork in the left.
If ever go to a restaurant where they have the cutlery laid out for you, that's how it will be.
Some left handed people prefer the other way round.

Technically speaking it should be fork in the left hand if your right handed, this gives ur stronger hand the power to do the cutting.
However im right handed and i use my fork in my right hand!! dunno why, guess im just cack handed, i do a lot of things back to front, but i can also write with both hands.
Ive tried to eat 'properly' though with my fork in my left and its impossible the food goes everywhere
so whatever works for u is ok
