Normally a player is not allowed to touch the ball twice in succession. Doing so is a fault and is penalized with loss of the rally (i.e. the opponent wins a point).

However there are exceptions:

1) After blocking, any player, including the player who touched the ball while blocking may touch the ball. (In indoor volley the block touch does not count as the first hit. So the defending team has 3 more hits to return the ball. In beach volley the block touch does count. The defending team has only 2 more hits, but it is still ok that the blocker touches the ball twice in succession)

2) The first hit of the team (not including service) does not have to be clean. So the ball may touch more than one part of the receiving player's body in succession, as long as this contacts occur during one action. (Nevertheless in beach volley the first hit must be clean if the player attempts an overhand pass using fingers. Even in beach volley one can do a "not so clean" overhand pass when receiving a hard driven ball which by definition is not a service)

If you are interested in the international rules of volley look them up on the FIVB home page:

Indoor: http://www.fivb.org/TheGame/Rules.htm
Beach: http://www.fivb.org/EN/BeachVolleyball/Rules/rules.htm

P.S.: There may be continental, regional or even local rules for volley differing slightly from the FIVB rules. In doubt check with the referee or your opponents before the game.

Well, it all depends upon how it happened.

Newer rules allow a double contact on the first contact. But, not on the second or third. This is common if a player overhead digs or overhead passes the first contact. It's all ok unless she holds it too long but double contact is allowed.

Also, if a blocker touches the ball in a blocking manner, and the ball comes down near her, she is allowed to play the ball again.

But, if a player plays the ball twice in a row on the second or third contact (common for a setter to do it) or a player..for some reason, plays the ball twice in a row, the ref would blow the whistle, hold up two fingers like a peace sign, and award a point to the other team.

Firmly, Very Firmly, especially the beach volleyball babes on Sky late at night, you know the ones , the brazen hussies in their skin tight outfits barely covering their decency, jiggling their jiggly bits around, flaunting their curves, hugging, giggling and bonding after every point, talking about sets and rubbers and dunking the balls.
Sorry I have to go now, it's time for my medication.

Digs and instruments can under no circumstances be hit two times. hence the double call even as putting. the in basic terms time a double hit is approved is even as a participant blocks, if the ball rolls or comes again on his/her side, the participant might want to hit it again.

Double touch is not aloud so point or sever would go to the team that did not double touch it.

The double touch has to be continuous and not have another team member touch it between.

That team will lose the point. It would be the same as "travelling" in basketball.
