They go round and round before sitting is to ensure that the place is safe and the master is also safe. It is their instincts to check before sitting or relaxing that under no circumstances, there should be any lapse in the security of its Master.

The habit is from when the dogs roamed in the wild. The dog goes around and round and collects grass or foliage and if u notice it will nudge a little here and a little there to ensure a comfortable resting place for himself.

Dogs are basically wild animals. They still have lot of their wild habits left in them. When they were in the wild they couldn't find a flat surface to liedown all the time. They mostly prefer to lie down on grass. Just to make the grass bed more comfortable & flat they used to make those rounds. & that habit still continues.

It's called "nesting" and the reason for it is to make whatever spot they have chosen to bed down for the night, or long nap, more comfortable and secure. It's a habit dogs do instinctively, goes back to the wild when they had to tromp on the grass and sticks or mud and dirt to try and make it more comfortable for them to sleep.

Dog is studying the surroundings before sleep. It is just making it ready for any eventualities during its rest. Any slightest sound can be inferred by the dog about its origin..after studying the surrounding..it knows the origin of the sound. During sleep, if it is not dangerous...it wont react, otherwise...the otherwise.

this is a action based back to when dogs were wild & lived outdoors, its instinct. Basically they are making their "bed" comfortable by stamping down any sticks or brush they may have used to make their bed....though todays indoor dogs sleep on couches & pet beds many animals still sleep in straw fille ddog houses n such & they have to stamp it down to make it sleepable

I had a Collie that used to do that before she laid down. I always thought she was just trying to pick the perfect spot to lay down and get comfortable.

I have 2 dogs and both just flop down where-ever.
Not saying they don't do it ever but I don't recall seeing them circle before they lay down.

It may go back to when they checked and sniffed around the lair for intruders in the wild.
