"Jihad" means to be a hard worker and to give effort and never give up on achieving our goals in life. it is the hard work to be a better person and work to reach high levels of success, always to work hard for a better life.
it's never to encourage violence or offence or intention of war, neither qurban, or sacrifice for God. some people take its meaning and change it to what will benefit their purposes whether it's wrong or right.
God love all people and all he wants us to do is to love eachother, not to hurt anybody and to be just and kind.
I'm not religious by the way, but I read a lot.

basically... the Qur'an speaks of "Jihad un-Nafs" or Jihad of one's sinful desires. The true and most difficult Jihad is the struggle to give up sins, especially those we are addicted to, and conform to God's will. God's will for us is to enjoin what if good and forbid what is evil. So the greater Jihad is against one's own sinful nature.
The lesser Jihad is Jihad-ul-Kital, which means the Holy War. This Jihad should only be declared in self defense. Some radical so-called Muslims scholars have perverted the true meaning of this second Jihad to allow Jihad to be called on the offensive. This is not sanctioned by the Qur'an or the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Jihad - To struggle
Jihad fi sabeel-illah - Struggle in the cause of Allah
There are various degrees of Jihad, QITAAL or Killing being the last level.
Jihad is ALWAYS in defense.
It does NOT condone murder of innocents and Mujahideen (those who struggle) are to follow rules of engagement.
Killing of innocents is forbidden in Islam.
Don't expect Muslims to line up to get shot or bombed or to be led to the gas chambers meekly.

Here are the cases that the Islam allows you to fight:
1-Defending yourself (country, land,..)
2-Defending your allies (who ever you have a defense treaty with), or who ever lived under Islamic rule (Non Muslims).
3-Defending the freedom of belief ( any one who want allow the word of GOD to be heard)
Any fight by Muslims (In Muslim History) had to be for these reasons only, if not, it is illegal

the real Jihad recommended by prophet Muhammad (pubh) is to conquer yourself to control your bad desire that can destruct you, ,human and universe. just follow your good desire that lead you to Allah's will, which make you to serve people. the battle in islam only for self defense, your rights are raped, especially if they dont allow you to worship Allah. If you find verses in Qur'an that moslem must kill infidels anywhere they meet them.. so it means it only happens in real battle between moslem and infidels..but still if the infidels force you not to worship Allah or kick you away from your land.

there have been many people who have given quotes from quran saying that Allah asks u to kill infidels or non-beleivers. but how many people know what a infidel is in islam.
in·fi·del (nf-dl, -dl)
n.
1. An unbeliever with respect to a particular religion, especially Christianity or Islam.
2. One who has no religious beliefs.
3. One who doubts or rejects a particular doctrine, system, or principle
if this is the infidel u are talking and linking to islam, then u are wrong. an infidel is not a man/woman from the opposite Faith. it simply means a person who is leading astray from the STRAIGHT PATH, which leads to God. in layman terms, it means, a person who commits sin. and every right religion and God will say the same thing.
WHO IS AN INFIDEL/ unbeleiver/ kufr?
who are not kind and compassionate to entire humankind
infidels are people who torture others,
who dont help needy ,
who commit adultary, who lie, steal and kill
a person who worships idols
those who bear false witness against brothers
those who dont serve their parents and community
those who take taxes
those who associate false Gods
those who do not give charity
those who opress the orphans
those who burn widows alive with their dead hubbies(sati)
those who shave widow women bald (christianity)
those who considered woman was a slave and 3rd class citizen
those who say that a woman cannot give witness
those who play with a woman's reputation
those who say that woman cannot be educated or give sermons
those who let their women and men commit fornication
those who do not desire for others what they deisre for themself
those who are not kind, not patient and enduring
those who are arrogant
WHO IS A BELEIVER:
a muslim isnt a muslim just by name. a muslim by heart is one who fulfills the needs of others and who remembers God in every little lawful and righteous thing he/she does.
Al-Baqara | 286 verses | The Calf سورة البقرة
Sura #2 | Madina
177 It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due. And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the Allah-fearing.
186 And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.
195 Spend your wealth for the cause of Allah, and be not cast by your own hands to ruin; and do good. Lo! Allah loveth the beneficent.
JIHAD -- THE STRUGGLE OR STRIFE FROM WITHIN TO EXCEL ONESELF AS A BETTER HUMAN BEING.
Jihad is of 2 types, the first one
1. accd to prophet muhammed-pbuh --'the most holiest of wars is the conquest of thyself.'
2. when one is trying to opress u and ur family, as a last resort to self-defense, when no peace talks will work.
the 3rd and new type of Jihad was introduced by the Extremists and Media, to brainwash people, so that they fill up their pockets at the expense of someone elses life. and let me tell u that there is no '72 virgin concept' in Islam. these people who kill and spread false lies, will Inshaallah be the first ones to be thrown into the Hellfire.
AS FOR PEOPLE WHO TRY TO KILL OTHER INNOCENT PEOPLE AND GIVE IT THE NAME OF ALLAH, LIKE THOSE SUICIDE BOMBERS -- MAY BE THEY FORGOT TO READ THIS VERSE. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO THOSE WHO DO IT IN A POLITICAL MANNER TOO.
Al-Rahman | 78 verses | The Beneficient سورة الرحمن
Sura #55 | Makkah
33 O company of jinn and men, if ye have power to penetrate (all) regions of the heavens and the earth, then penetrate (them)! Ye will never penetrate them save with (Our) sanction.
just like those Islam bashers who read Quran and dont understand whats written in it. there is no difference between the two -- one blows up innocent people while the other blows up the whole religion.
islam is a religion where one can not even think of back-biting and u are speaking of terrorism.
Al-Hujraat | 18 verses | The private apartments سورة الحجرات
Sura #49 | Madina
12 O ye who believe! Shun much suspicion; for lo! some suspicion is a crime. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Ye abhor that (so abhor the other)! And keep your duty (to Allah). Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful.
about KILLING:
Aal-e-Imran | 200 verses | The family of Imran سورة آل عمران
Sura #3 | Madina
159 It was by the mercy of Allah that thou wast lenient with them (O Muhammad), for if thou hadst been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from round about thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult with them upon the conduct of affairs. And when thou art resolved, then put thy trust in Allah. Lo! Allah loveth those who put their trust (in Him).
Al-Baqara | 286 verses | The Cow سورة البقرة
Sura #2 | Madina
60 And when Moses asked for water for his people, We said: Smite with thy staff the rock. And there gushed out therefrom twelve springs (so that) each tribe knew their drinking-place. Eat and drink of that which Allah hath provided, and do not act corruptly, making mischief in the earth.
Al-Maeda | 120 verses | The Table Spread سورة المائدة
Sura #5 | Madina
32 For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth.
Al-Baqara | 286 verses | The Cow سورة البقرة

Sura #3 | Madina
134 Those who spend (of that which Allah hath given them) in ease and in adversity, those who control their wrath(-anger) and are forgiving toward mankind; Allah loveth the good;
ABOUT THE PUNISHMENT FOR KILLING
33 The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom;

Al-Isra | 111 verses | The night journey سورة الإسراء
Sura #17 | Makkah
37 And walk not in the earth exultant. Lo! thou canst not rend the earth, nor canst thou stretch to the height of the hills.
