I think I might need some professional help - what do you think?
Been indulging for many years, recently decided that enough was enough, mainly because we can't find any at the moment but now, after a couple of days, find myself constantly thinking about having a smoke, and ways to sort some out. Was even considering driving 100miles to get some.

Anyone had something similar, and if so, what's your advise.

I think I'm probably too weak-willed to see this through on my own.

Hey, uselessadvice - at least I can spell, and have no fear or embarassment about my own shortcomings. At least I'm addressing the issue, rather than just scoring points. I'm sure you have your own problems too, but are too scared or embrrassed to do anything about it.

We're talking at least 15 years of fairly heavy, daily use.

Your addiction is psychological not physical. You're hanging out for a smoke and there's no easy way to relieve that feeling. The longer you go without, the easier it will be. Try to avoid situations and actions that trigger your memory of smoking. These can be subtle but powerful influences on you. It could be something as simple as a friend saying, " Hey let's watch a movie!" Then suddenly you're thinking, "Yeah, that sounds cool! Have a smoke and watch a movie" These triggers are always there. Identify them and be aware.

I see a lot of dementia patients and they are getting younger. Go to a residential care home see what dementia looks like if that doesn't give you an incentive then nothing will.

You obviously have time and resources to make choices in your life so substitute a bad addiction for a healthy one. Take up running start with a quarter mile then build up 2 minutes at a time. By the end of the month you will be running for an hour and feel healthier. Do anything that is good for you.

Channel your thoughts not about what you don't want but what about you do want. There is a speaker ( a British guy) who does private seminars on this sort of thing who is no nonesense and really good. Martyn Wand or something like that.

Marijuana is generally not considered to be physically addictive but many people become psychologically dependent. The fact that being without is causing you to feel less than normal and that you are concerned about being dependent on it is indication enough that you may have a problem,

There are 12 Step programs for marijuana just as there are for alcohol. Narcotics Anonymous also serves those whose drug use was marijuana.

For some immediate help, try:

This will give info and meeting locations.

Good luck to you. Recognizing there is a problem is a giant step.

It is very addictive. I had a friend who used to smoke ALL the time, his memory was so bad that he once forgot to turn into my drive way which he had been through a thousand times. Well done for giving it up. Go to your Dr and seek professional advice. Im not sure on what helps giving it up, but Im sure a Dr would know... Good Luck :)

Yeah, you've about said it. In retrospect I found it to be far more addictive than I ever would have imagined, but it was mostly psychological.

My body did crave it physically however and I did have withdrawal symptoms from it for a while. Mostly it was sleeplessness.

It's been nearly 20 years since I gave up more than 20 years of daily use of it, and don't miss it. I would like to have access to it once in a while though. It is VERY relaxing and aside from making me lazy, I did like it - and would still like to partake every so often.

most of the time, the addiction to cannabis comes from the tobacco that is added in with the joint, meaning the addiction is really the nicotine...
also, it is important to understand why you smoke pot in the first place... if it is psychological, professional help would be necessary. it sounds like it is beyond recreational so i think you should seek help. nothing too serious really, just as long as you don't smoke TOO much... side effects of smoking excessive amounts can be memory loss and slight schizophrenia...
perhaps find a counsellor at a free clinic who can help give a more professional diagnosis and refer you to someone who can help you beat the addiction

I don't think it is chemically addictive like heroin or crack, it's psychologically addictive, as in you like the sensations it gives you.
Have you tried to find something else you enjoy doing? Could you take up a hobby?
I know this probably won't help much, but I hope it can.

Give it a few more days, the reason you want it so bad is because you can't get it right now. Best thing to do is to rough it out the next few days and just don't buy anymore when it becomes available!!!

I am sure you can do it :)

What ever you try to give up be it food, drink, drugs etc you will constantly think about it, it's part of the addiction.
Your will power is needed to train yourself that you do not want or need the thing to which you are addicted.

Good luck
