I've always had the best luck with travel agents. They've always gotten me cheaper deals than internet sites.

well, you didnt say where from... but if you're flying from UK... do hunt around - a lot!!! - the prices are going up & down every week.. Having been doing just that mysef, I've seen from £160 - £450+ in the last month.
There are a lot of direct flights out of LHR/LGW/MAN for around £280 (inclusive of taxes etc) at the moment, you shouldnt need pay more than that, if you are booking now, for sure.

You could try the usual suspects:
BA
American Airlines - they have the most leg room!
Virgin
Delta

also try searching through:
travelsupermarket.com
ebookers

you can also try some of the american sights & buy in dollars, there were some good prices on the site: gatewaylax.com a couple of weeks ago.

If your priority is to keep your budget as low as poss then its also worth looking at airports other than your closest one - eg if you would usually go from manchester, you may find there are cheaper flights from London & you could get the megabus down the country for £1 or you could get a flight from Manchester to London & then the London to NY flight - this sometimes works out cheaper, so explore keeping your options as open as possible.

There are flights that are less expensive but not direct (eg LHR to La Guardia) but these generally involve a really long change over & in my opinion are not worth the difference in price.

Good luck :)

I personally like orbitz.com. Especially if you need a hotel also. They show all the online rates on their site and you just choose which you want.
