Haven't known it to function since Rural America.
Blood, in-laws, kids, oldsters, teens. Geeezzz!

I've thought of this many times.

An entire family could afford and live in 40 room mansion, when one calculates all the individual homes and expenses that each one pays out.

Together they could afford domestic help.
Consider 5 members paying $300,000.00 each for a house. OR more.

Total, $1,500,000.00 UP!

One would not have to be wealthy.

Problem, would someone renege on their share?
You used more water than I did. You have 4 kids to bathe and wash clothes. You watched TV more that I did, and used more electricity. Your kids ate my fruit out the fridge. Who wore my dress and where is my necklace.

Who in hell left their toys on the stairs? Damned near broke my back. Where in hell is my new tie. I don't give a damn if you can't get in your bath. I'm taking a sh**. Go outside. YA, well, up yours.
Who left their damn bike behind my car. Tore up my muffler. Damn #&*&^)) kids.
Turn down the f***** music. I have to go to work at 5:00 AM.
NO! Go ask your father. Well, then ask his f***** father.
Could be fun, huh? WW IV.
