Jesus is what God's Word predicted. In the Psalms and Proverbs and some books of the porphets, direct predictions describe Jesus. Jesus is what the Word tells about, so he is God's word (not literally).

The word Bible means little books. It's a collection of writings inspired by God over a period of many years. The nation of Israel did have a Bible which is called the Torah. The Bible as we know it today is the Torah along with the Christian Greek scriptures. From the time of Noah onward, the words spoken to men by God were written down and orally transmitted so it can be said that the people in the Bible did have a Bible.

When Jesus is called "The Word' at John 1:1, it's referring to his role as God's spokesman. Also, it refers to the fact that Jesus was the manifestation of the prophecies spoken in God's word about a messiah, so Jesus could rightly be called The Word.

I am sure that this bible and the tradition of carrying bible and swearing by that would have come later. Leave alone, the christian religion, first there was "the word" and not the letter and the book. The book is the compilation of the words spoken by the prophets. Even the Vedas in Hindu religion, were meant for chanting and to be taught to the disciples by word of mouth by the Guru.

The book is but a medium, but over a period, the book containing the written form of the teachings of the prophets attain certain religious significance and reverence. This is understandable but the medium can not assume more importance than the teaching itself.

I believe the current Bible (uhm, I think there are 100's of different ones actually) only bares the slightest resemblance to the original books, due to translation (20 centuries worth) and re-interpretation.

So to claim the Bible God's Word is not correct. It should be called "The way mankind sees God's Word"

(b.t.w. I don't follow any religion, I'm a realistic atheist)

(note: realistic atheist means: I don't believe in the existence of God or gods, but I'm realistic enough I'm not all-knowing, so I might be wrong not to believe, yet I don't believe in the existence of God or gods)

(added note: Bible comes from the greek word meaning book, which is just what the Bible is, a book - for a long time, however, this was the only book that the common folk new about and where read from in churches, i.e. The Book)

This is a very good question, one I haven't come across before.

Jesus was called the Word, as you rightly said because if you look at Rev 19:13 he is honoured with the title The Word, as he was the perfect imitator of God, thus he could be said to be speaking Gods words John14:9,10 proves this point.

Before the bible was written, early christens had prophets, judges, and later on had Jesus and his disciples to guide them until all the scriptures had been written down fully.
2Tim3:16 , states all scripture is inspired by God....
So although human hands did the copying it was through holy spirit that they were divinely inspired to write down the scriptures as if God was dictating to a secretary.
Although the secretary writes the words, you wouldn't say it was her letter or her book, you would credit it to the person doing the dictating.

But it does say in the Bible that Jesus is God's Word. John 1:1-14
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 ¶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. Mt. 3.1 · Mk. 1.4 · Lk. 3.1, 2

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 ¶ That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 ¶ And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Christian Bible, Muslim Quran, Hindu Gita were all written for people by people, we all have to believe in GOD, or the CREATOR in some form or the other, without the fear of GOD the World would be under the rule of Anarchy.

No one has seen GOD, no one can claim to have seen GOD, all claim to have heard from him / her. Is GOD White / Black, is GOD male or Female.

When Christianity was being spread by Jesus Christ, none of his disciple had any Bibles in Hand, he taught them verbally, similar to Holy Quran, no one had the Quran, it was written much later on, after listening to Prophet Mohammed. Same stories go for all the other religions.

A leader who was pure in mind and heart guided people into believing in purity and fear the creator, thus religions were created, and instilled the fear of GOD.

But also by creating different GODS, we have the problems in the World today, fighting for each others GODS and their values.

Dylan Wrote:(Above)
If you were famous, would you have your autobiography before you ever lived your life???

Well Dylan, If I was to worship "Christ" with my life, I would certainly want to know ALL about him before I accepted him as my life's devotion.

Christianity leaves gaps in the new TESTEment.
What happened to Jesus from age 1 to 14, 16 to 30, and what happened with Christianity from 34 A.D. To about 80 A.D..... No christian ever knows as the New Testament was written in about 80 A.D. So before you accept, do some research.
