To be a good cyclist you'll need a few things. First a decent bike will help, Second the heart and desire to be a good rider which most do not have, And lastly the time to dedicate to the sport.

The more riding time and miles you put into your riding the better rider you become, it takes practice and more practice.

Set some goals ( distance, time, avg. ) etc. that you want to spend or achieve on the bike then extend them with time, Just make sure they're not to high to start. Remember the Pros like Lance and George ride 6 to 8 hours a day mixed with alot of other things to achieve there goals.

Not to say that you want to be a Pro but you will get out of the sport what you put in. ( Heart and Desire )

u need to build some good muscle first. try goin up hills in a higher gear so it takes more effort, and DONT stand up. sit down and pedal up a hill. after several months ur legs shood start 2 get bigger- with muscle. then u can practice sprinting, u need 2 rock the bike for balance. its hard 2 explain how 2 rock it, but i think its the natural way a person handles a bike wen sprinting. next- position. i usually stick my butt up in the air with my head extending slighlty over the handlebars, back almost parallel to the ground. u also need to have the proper diet so u will have the stamina and endurance for sprinting. eating a Powerbar an hour os so b4 a ride helps 2.

Typical US road sprinting is basically a game of absolute top speed, with a little bit of timing and some acceleration thrown in.

The tactical aspects could take a long time to discuss, but the physical side is straightforward. Pick out a nice level out of the wind stretch of road, at least 500 meters long with a definite starting and finish marker like a tree. Wind up a fast gear as you head into it, then time yourself with various gear combinations and pacing strategies. Besides learning how to get there as fast as possible, you'll get a great workout.

Four little words: GET OUT AND RIDE. The best way to become a better cyclist is to ride every chance you get. Try not to ride the same route too many times in a row, either - mix it up to keep it interesting.

Intervals, intervals, intervals.
Along with the appropriate distance training, they allow you to spend more time at the intensity level you need to create the desired training effect.
If you want to be a better sprinter, speed work, like motor-pacing will give you fast results and, more importantly, short intervals with full recovery. Like 30 seconds full bore and 5 minutes at a low intensity.
Get a book call Maximum Performance for Cyclists. great workouts in the back and it's more scientifically based that the traditional methods.
Good luck and I hope not to see you at my next race.
