Your son probably just wants the reassurance that you're still there. Pick him up and hold him as much as you possibly can (one of the answerers above is quite correct- you'll regret it if you don't give him as much affection as possible now). Why make him cry, if you know you can stop it. There's plenty of time to teach him to rely on himself, and the time is not when he's still an infant.

In response to the people telling you to not pick him up: 'Crying it out' is a horrible thing to do to a baby, and it teaches them nothing more than a fear that their parent(s) may have abandoned them.

you might find he hes just feeling a bit down and needs a cuddle or hes learn't that if he cry's he get a reaction out of you which is by picking him up but baby's go through phase's where they want to be held all the time. He might be going through a growth splurt and his body is a bit sore and having you pick him up makes him feel better which is good. If it really is worrying you take him back to the doctor he might not of had any thing wrong with him when you first took him you might just find that he had something just taking its time to come out like a sore ear or something. My two year old does that, takes about a week before i know what the problem is so i hope this helps

Can we say SPOILED!!! Why do people these days always make excuses for spoiled kids, let him cry for a few minutes before you pick him up!! 13 months old is already too late to change anything so either continue spoiling him or put a stop to this! Your the Mama, control the situation!!!!

Let him cry, I know it can be nerve racking but he needs to learn how to soothe himself and occupy himself. My 4 year old did the same thing at this age and my doctor told me that if she isn't in pain and hasn't been crying for 3 hours then let her cry. The worst she will do is wear herself out and fall asleep. Good Luck, this too shall pass. :)

He just wants to be picked up! He has developed the art of manipulation, crying = getting picked up. If you know he's fed, dry, not in pain, then leave him. Get his mind occupied on something else

He's spoiled. When he cries you pick him up. He has you wrapped around is little finger and he is in control. Stop picking him up. Put him in his room to cry it out, put a child gate up in his doorway and get some headphones for yourself, check on him every now and them but let him cry. As long as you keep picking him up this behavior will continue.

13 months of age--he is in the middle of "separation anxiety" age.
They get sacared of strangers and they are struggling with their feelings of insecurity. Let him know that you are there by hugging him, picking him up, kissing him and verbally reassuring him too... In a couple of months, he will get over it.

Don't pick him up, sit beside him and play with toys, but on DVDs that are at his age and music. He needs to learn to have confidence in himself and that you can't do that. It's something the child needs to learn.

It won't hurt him to cry it out and find out on his own. Not to worry, you're not a bad parent if you don't pick him up all the time.

He may have been inadvertently taught by you that crying gets him held. There's nothing wrong with holding your baby by the way. Do it every minute you can, because when they get older they don't want you touching them. :)

mother knows best....I truly believe that - if his behavior is different than normal and YOU think he is sick, he probably is...may be an allergy or something...he loves you, trusts you, wants to be with you, and may just want some touch...but if you think he is sick, get a 2nd medical opinion
