I think sarcasm is what I call "negative humor." It intends to mock or deride the subject in question. It can be funny in moderation, but when every comment is sarcastic, it makes it seem like the person is mocking everything and does not make them seem very friendly or relatable. That is, unless the situation is absurd in the most exaggerated sense (when I say this, I think of, for example, the Mtv show Daria. It was funny because the characters were always absurd, and therefore, Daria's comments were highly appropriate.)
People generally use sarcasm out of insecurity or mostly, to be defensive. It's almost a "I'm so sarcastic that I think life is idiotic, and frankly, I will find you idiotic as well."

Someone once said that sarcasm is the soul of wit. It is a means of making a point that should be obvious but for some reason isn't.

Sarcasm is usualy brought on by different forms of jealousy. People are sarcastic towards you because of who or what you are or how you're presenting yourself at any given time.
