I was mugged several times over a decade. Most of the time I never reported it. I live in San Francisco. After a mugging last year, I called the police. In a frank conversation, off the record, they told me if they were me they would carry a gun. As a law abiding citizen, I would be charged with the gun but in this liberal city where thugs get only a slap on the wrist there would probably be no jail time. I mean, if the police are telling me this, then maybe I should consider carrying a gun. I had my jaw broken on Christmas Day in 1999 by a radical black gang simply because I was white, just walking down the street minding my own business. Now my face is disfigured. I'm tired of the punks getting away with everything. Bless the DA who is trying to give manditory jail time for firearm possession in this city. The problem is the thugs come over from the East Bay where they know they will get State Prison time and they do their dirty work over here where nothing will happen.

While it may or may not be true that carrying a concealed weapon, as you suggest, might not result in penalties, it is highly probable that if you ever fired your weapon, even if in self-defense, you could face severe penalties. If you are so frustrated with crime in your community that you are considering buying a gun in response, then surely you are frustrated enough to consider moving to a community that has a much lower rate of crime, particularly violent crime. Some might suggest that that isn't fair, but nothing in life is fair. And, it could be suggested that people who swim in shark-infested waters are much more likely to get bitten than those who swim in shark-free waters.

Also, consider that it is easier to keep crime down in a community where it hasn't taken hold yet as opposed to trying to reduce crime in an area where crime is rampant, such as is typical for most metropolitan areas in the US.

Hold up! You have been mugged "several times" in a decade. Dude you should be packing like a white man at the Source awards. As a regular citizen I say you should be armed to protect yourself. Hey if you shoot a thug that is mugging you I really don't think the Police will mess with you too much. You in a sense help them by not letting people like that run around and mug and possibly kill someone else. Moral of the story get a concealed weapons permit.

Seems like you are a easy picking. Put aside the law and regulation first, I have a couple of pointer.

1. What makes you think that they can't grab a gun from you and use it against you ?
2. Are you ready to use it and shoot someone ? And then take the consequences of that ?
3. Are you someone who is responsible and careful enough to handle a firearm ? Do you forget things and loses thing easy ?

There are other options.

- Are you living in a bad area ? If yes, move away.
- Are you tiny small body frame ? If yes, do some weight training and martial arts.
- Carry mace or some other non-lethal defense weapon or pepper spray.

YES, what we need to do, is get back to the way the law was handled back a century or more, such as in the old west, the victim actually had rights, and those rights went up to, and including killing in self defense. The U.S. Courts are all in favor of being so Politically Correct that the victim is usually given the short end of the stick, and that is way past wrong. What we need is Mandatory executions, and dare i suggest, Public Executions so that the idea will quickly spread, that we are once again a nation that realizes that we will no longer tolerate criminal offenses. I could rant on this subject for hours, but i think you have the general idea how i feel about it.

I own a rifle but I don't carry it with me. It's for home defense. It's kind of hard to get a concealed weapons permit. You have to have a reason other then you might get attacked, Such as you carry large sums of money frequently. I'd say get some pepper spray and or mase. It will stop them and you won't have the responsibility of carring a fire arm.

If you do intend on protecting yourself, you should take a firearms safety course. Go to a firing range and practice firing the weapon, so that you are comfortable with it. No one can say how they will react in a situation where someone is pointing a gun in your face. The main thing to ask yourself is will you be able to react quickly enough to pull out the gun and shoot your assailant before he decides to shoot you? In my opinion guns are more likely to be used against the owner in situations like you've described. If you are surprised or ambushed, the gun does you no good.

i think the average person should not carry a gun, in your case probably not if you hve been mugged several times and have not gotten one yet then you should not, better to get your jaw broken than shot with your own gun. do nto need a person who is upset with the system to carrya gun...but for the most part it is up to the individual, if you would hesitate to shoot someone or be too quick then you should not get one

Honestly, the situation sucks either way. If you do carry a gun, you have to face the possibility you can seriously injure or kill someone, in self defence or by accident.
On the other hand if you dont carry one, you can risk yourself being injured or even worse, killed.
I'd suggest a stun gun. Or bear mase. Something you can defend yourself with to get enough time to call the police or run away.

Have you checked into getting a concealed weapons permit? I have one in my state and I carry a gun everywhere I go besides if you actually have to use it to defend your self would you rather pay the fine for carrying, or risk being killed...I would much rather pay the fine and know I took at least one thug off the street

Why, so you can get it taken away from you and shot with your own gun? No offense but you don't sound like the type who would actually use it if it came down to it. Someone who was really going to use a gun wouldn't be on here asking others if they should carry one....so I would say no in your case
