Picked one up like new at a garage sale for five bucks and I don't know much about them!

I do not know about any negatives, but as I have understood there are positives definitely.
If you have gone near any water falls in your area you would have noticed freshness in the air in plentry. You would have felt like inhaling the air deep into your lungs. It is because the air is flesh with negative ions!
Similarly after rains have just stopped you can the feel the same effect out in the open.
But it all depends upon the concentarion of the negative ions that exist in the air. If the the one you have picked up is able to produce the required number of ions then you can always live in fresh air that is lively.
Toshiba AC units with this facility claims to maintain more than 35000 ions/cc of air, which is higher than the concentration near the falls.
