Because most people who call themselves Atheists do so only because they have dismissed the precepts of the religions they are familiar with. Christians, and others, like to put it about that that's what atheism is. If they researched the real meaning of the words Atheism and Agnosticism as thoroughly as they have the religions they reject, most would realize they are actually the more open minded Agnostic.
