there is no air in the packets, so you can't shake them, shaking relys on having an air space for the material to move around in.

You don't need to shake a packet because you squeeze it. Shaking the bottle moves the ketchup to the top.

I think they assume you're goiing to squidge the ketchup to the bottom before opening the top of the packet which would be as good as mixing it.
Also packets are less likely to be sitting around long enough to separate since they're using in fast food places & not left in fridges.

lol I DO shake my ketchup packets. It's really fun. You hold it very gently so the sauce has room to groove in the packet and shake away!

Bottles are large enough for certain ingredients to settle out over time, with the small size of a packet, this doesn't really occur as there isn't room!

In a ketchup bottle if you dont shake it it comes out watery.
