Cold Turkey both times. I am 47 now, the first time I quit for 13 years and got stupid one day and smoked one and that was all it took. I quit again in 2003 and have not smoked since.

"It's true what they say, no one ever quits." -Sin City-

I've gone back and forth for 17 yrs. At this point in the game I just look at minimizing. I chew, which is vital to not being completely obsessed with cigs. But I've gone 3yrs. w/out a single cig, then I'm having a beer or w/e with the right friend, bum a smoke, buy a pack, smoke for a week and then recenter myself and go as long as I can w/out. I have a highly addictive personality and the thought of quitting "for good" stresses me out so bad I need a cig, so I don't think about that at all.

Minimizing and a reward/punishment thing where if I don't smoke for a month I take that $$$ and buy something nice; and if I do smoke I bike/ workout 2X as hard. Either way I come out ahead and beat the shame cycle and feeling down.

I quit cold turkey after a very serious asthma attack. I used a straw cut to the length of a cigarrette to chew on instead of smoking or eating. I quit for 8 years.
