It's an old saying. All it means is that u've nearly got the idea but ur not quite there yet. It's like sayin u picked the right tree to climb but the wrong branch. Or ur in the right neighbourhood but the wrong house.... get it?

I haven't heard it put that way, but as a pastor....
a) Some people "own" their pew - been sitting there for 33 years and if some poor soul sits their their is hell to pay.
b) Some people show their membership status by where they sit: visitors and those leaving the church tend toward the back.
Highly involved sit up front - thankfully my wife chose pew 2.

At one time or another we've all found our selves in the right church but the wrong pew when we've shown up for an appointment a day early or a day late. So the phrase means that we almost got it right but not quite.

It just means that you have the right idea about something, maybe that you need to accept Jesus Christ into your heart, but that you might have the wrong idea about how to do it. (works instead of faith or just one and not the other).
