OVER HAUL OF AN AIRCRAFT MEANS THAT THE AIRCRAFT OR IT'S COMPONENTS HAVE RUN OUT OF FLYING HOURS AND NEEDS TO BE STRIPPED DOWN AND X-RAYED TO FIND ANY FAULTS INCLUDING CORROSION AND CRACKS IN THE STRUCTURE. THE AIRCRAFT ALSO HAS IT'S EXPIRED COMPONENTS ( FLAPS , PYLONS ETC ) REMOVED AND PLACED IN A REPAIR SECTION WITH ALREADY REPAIRED COMPONENTS BEING TAKEN FROM THE STORES AREA AND FITTED TO THE AIRCRAFT. THIS ALSO HAPPENS TO THE ENGINES AND INSTUMENT AND ELECTRICS. THE PAINT IS ALSO REMOVED AND THE AIRCRAFT IS RE-SPRAYED. THE WHOLE PROCESS LASTS AROUND 40 TO 50 DAYS. THE AIRCRAFT ONCE COMPLETE HAS IT'S HOURS REINSTATED.

Ok, There are three standard maintenance procedures in the repair cycle of an aircraft component.

Repair - when the unit has failed and needs to be repaired

Test - If the unit just came off the aircraft and needs cleaning and to ensure it still operates within the specs layed out by the manufacturer

Overhaul - The component has done a predefined amount of operating hours or cycles, now certain parts need to be changed or reworked, regreased, oiled etc and tested and calibrated.

An overhaul is when a component (e.g. an aircraft engine) is disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary and tested using FAA approved procedures.

Aircraft engines and components must be checked regularly, usually after a certain number of flight hours. If you buy a used aircraft you might notice the term TBO - this means 'time before overhaul', i.e. when you must do the next check.
