Back in high school, I used to write a lot, and well about anything w/o trying hard. I have led to believe that writing is my passion, because I got good grades in all my writing activites back then. I even got lucky in winning some school essay contests. I just love it: love writing scripts for school plays, novel-like (love) stories, out from my imagination, simple poems, and essays (for my theme writing.) But now that I am in college, I hardly write when I am supposed to write a lot especially now that I have a Journalism course. Why can't I write anymore?

(What could have been wrong with me? Do I lack visualization? Did I lost my sooo wide imagination? Did I get lazy in starting to write?)Or was I simply just wrong to think about wrtitng as a talent, because I just had fun with it before--just a past time in the past?

Writing is a talent when you are good at it. A person could love to bang around on the piano, but suck at it... they aren't talented. If you were winning contests, then you are definitely talented. I think the question that you are really asking is why you can’t do it when you are prompted to. Many artists run into this same dilemma. For some people, writing happens when the inspiration hits and it's really hard to force it. Most painters who paint on canvas would never paint houses for a living. You don't always get inspired every day. It's PASSION that drives you... the difference between making love to your husband or wife when that PASSION hits you and the difference between doing it at the same time every Wednesday night. It sucks when you have to force it. There are things you can try however. Remember those things that inspired you and write about that. Remember those places that inspired you, go there and write. Also, Journalism and Fiction are very very different things. You tend to have more freedom in Fiction. If you're a novelist, sitting in a journalism class, it can drive you crazy. I've been there.

You are probably really tired and busy. Most professional writers set aside a time and place to write (or try to) everyday. What you write may suck; you may have to throw it away the next day. But writing professionally takes a lot of personal discipline and having a routine will help you to focus and relax. Make sure you are well rested (you are in college, that's a joke) and there aren't too many distractions. Whatever you do, don't give up on something you love. You will always regret it.
You might also find out if your English/Literature dept has a creative writing class--that sounds like what you are used to. The teacher can probably give you some hints to help you out.

It can be both. But if you want to write something that other people will want to read, you must have a story to tell and be good at expressing yourself. You could call that talent, or you could call it creativity plus technical skill. Both creativity and skills can be taught and developed with practice. They are not necessarily things you must be born with.

And yes, you can get what is called "writer's block". You have some very good advice from other answerers on this topic.

I find it hard to believe you got good grades in writing in an English speaking country. "I have led to believe" is not very good English. Fortunately, you have chosen a profession where writing skills are unimportant.

I used to write more when I was younger too and I thought it would be the thing I am gonna do in my life. You know I may not even manage to write ten words in a whole year ! but some days I have enough inspirations for books :D
I guess you never lose the writing talent, but you may just need inspiration and motivation. There are many books may help you out in how to enhance your writing abilities.Actually your problems faced loads of people.

Hmm, well, if it is your passion then go for it!
If you have a strong talent in it, then don't let it go to waste.
Journalism is pretty boring, but I mean if you are as good as you say, spice it up some! C'mon girl! Get to thinking and use that creative mind you got! Don't give up! You'll see in the end that it is worth it. :~)

I bet you got praised, too, by teachers, your parents, maybe other students. Do look into some more creative stuff; it'll help with your journalism so you won't get stale, and it might make you feel appreciated and proud of your talent, and in turn, reignite the passion.
