I never use Windows Messenger because I don't like the interface. Also seems like there's always a 'port' problem using a router. I DID download MSN messenger but took it off - as actually I liked yahoo's messenger better. Is the Windows Live Messenger replacing the Windows Messenger in Windows or is it a separate piece of software - like MSN was.

It is the replacement for MSN messenger, not the old Windows Messenger. The old Windows Messenger will remain on your computer.
