Cottages are available in Upstate New York anywhere along the Finger Lakes region (wine country -- Ithaca, Cortland, Elmira, etc.) and Adirondacks (Mts.).

New York City, The Hamptons, Lake George area, the catskills, the berkshires, up the hudson there are all of these tiny towns, I'm sure you could find some cute bed and breakfast somewhere.

Lake Placid in the Adirondacks - quaint town, nice path that you can walk or jog around, close to Whiteface Mt to take a gondola ride to the top. Very peaceful.

the muse hotel in nyc is beautiful and its rigfht in times square but it is on one of the side streets. you have times square down the block but its still pretty quite in the room. the bathrooms are beautiful and the showers are all marble. me and my bf are going there for our second time this year in may. they can also do messages in your room but that is at an extra cost. if you go when its nice out you can request a room with a balcony.

It's not exactly in NY, but if you go up to Niagara Falls and cross the border to Niagara by the Lake in Canada, it is the most delightful village with carriage rides and quaint shops and restaurants. We love it.
