Old books would look lovely behind the glass doors of a china cabinet. These can be found very inexpensively at thrift shops, library sales, estate sales and auctions. Sometimes you can get an entire boxful for a dollar or two. A collection of quilts would also be colorful and a real conversation starter. Small works of art, matted instead of framed on small easels. Any type of collection, such as paperweights, animal figurines, clocks, music boxes. One type of collection that is classic and eye catching....ceramic pieces in blue and white....teapots, vases, platters , canisters, and figurines.

You can use any number of combinations. Go to your local antique mall, and look at how they display a whole variety of things. You could open the doors, and let colorful linens flow out. This look is good if you want a country decor. Elegant candles and old books are great for a vintage look. This can be enhanced with other antiques like old wooden colorful blocks or metal toys. A collection of colored glass bottles and vases also would go with a collection of coordinated personal family pictures. This is such a personal decision that anything you decide on will look wonderful. My best advice is, whatever you decide, error to the side of less is more rather than letting the look be overly cluttered.

I do a seasonal thing with a small Welsh dish dresser.

Pick thru all your china/crystal and find colors, shapes that work well for the season you're doing. Add in candles, candy dish w/ seasonal candy, even confetti and ribbon for festive.

This way, my rarely used crystal items get seen, the appearance changes, etc...

Pier 1 is a good place to find things to coordinate with what you already have....

My grandmother had a collection of bone china coffee cups with the matching saucers. Candles is a nice idea also. Scout estate sales and see what strikes your fancy. Maybe you'll come up with
a new hobby to collect.

Mix it up! Put a teapot or two, framed pictures of your favorite people, some books, candles, an old doll, anything that strikes your fancy. I agree that just china is boring.

you can put just about anything in an old china cabinet, i put my most cherished photos in pretty frames and nic-nacs that people have given me over the years. china cabinets are great display cabinets. my sister has her collection of very old wine glasses in hers with old wine bottles , and old silver pieces(tea servers) anything that you find beautiful that will fit in it to be displayed is best.

it was originally designed as a display case, use it as such. show off your hobby/crafts , collectables, photos, etc. use a shelf in it to highlight the time of yr and or holidays, make a tribute to someone near and dear to you.
