Hey blue.bios,
There are many free sites to find ancestors. I put a few in the list below. Finding Ancestors can be done in many ways. You can talk to others that have already done the work in GENFORUM, or you can dig up records on your own. If you get serious about it, you should get a software package to track who is related to whom. That way, you can make sense of the surnames that get added to your family tree.
I recommend GENFORUM to find people with surnames that are the same as branches in your family tree. You may eventually want to participate in a DNA test, for the MALE surname path - this works great. You can get Uncles to participate on your mothers maiden side. These tests link to an ancestor that someone else may have in common, so you can then know that their research applies to you also (at least you are not the product of the mailman...)
Hope you have fun with these sites. Note, that Cindy's list is a Site of Sites - if you have any needs, special, ethnic, obituaries, cemetaries, etc. Cindys list is full of suggestions.

Yes there is. Go to www.familysearch.org.
The site is run by the Mormon church, but don't worry, they won't try to convert you! It's very important for Mormons to trace their ancestors, so they do extensive research. You won't find a more thorough site anywhere on the net, free or otherwise.
If you or your ancestors come from the UK, it would be worth registering on www.genesreunited.com. You can't directly search for ancestors - what happens is, people post their family trees on the site. They are private, but you can ask the system to search for a "match" with your ancestors. If you get a match, then you can email the owner of the family tree, to ask them for more details.
It can get a bit frustrating. Even if your ancestors have unusual names, it's surprising how many people have that name! I've been a member for a couple of years without finding out any more information about my family. Then I contacted one person, and found that not only did he have a match, but he had another 792 names that I could add to my tree!
