Smelling for dogs is just like seeing for us. So, if someone ask you, what are you seeing for when you walk... the answer would be the same: ALMOST EVERYTHING.

That's how they take in an environment, by smelling it. Their sense of smell is 50 times better than humans. A dog can tell what happened in an area of grass, just by smelling the ground. When they come along urine or feces, or food, they usually smell it for a longer time, because they're so intense. The urine and feces from animals can give the dog a perfect description of the animal.

Well, dogs being the type of species they are, seem to be slightly territorial, so if a dog has previously been there, they enjoy marking the territory, once again, or for the first time as theirs, so any other animal that passes through that area shall know that they were there.

They're smelling to see what other animals have been there before them. It's kind've like a doggy version of the newspaper each yard is like the next page........hehehe.
My dogs get all excited when they smell that one of their doggy buddies have just passed by a certain area before we go out, they try and run to catch up to them (sometimes we do catch up and sometimes they are to far ahead and have already finished their walk before we can catch them)

Any and everything. Especially the scents of other dogs who have passed by. The scents left by other dogs are almost like a note they tell your dog a lot about the one who left it

Other dogs leave little markings in the grass, and on tree trunks etc. both male and female doggies enjoy sniffing these little love notes. or whatever kind of message that the other critter left there.
