All depends on the drinker. An experienced drinker of scotch will have developed a suitable palate for a single malt such as Laphroig, its very peaty ( some descibe it as tasting like TCP) If you havnt developed the palate for a potent flavour your best sticking with something like J Walker black/ blue. It is said that the older the Whisky is aged, the smoother the taste. Also you have to think of the Barrel its been aged in and the were abouts of Scotland its being produced.

You may want to try, scotches that have been aged in sherry, madeira or port casks as these will impart a sweetness. Some people find this makes for a smoother taste.

For example: The Glendronach 15 year old Sherry Cask
Glenmorangie Single Highland Malt Scotch Madeira Wood Finish

As for best and smoothest, there is thousands of them. An ex-boss of mine used to say that his favourite Scotch is the next one.

If you have a few bucks to throw away, give Johnny Walker Blue a try. MacCallan 18 year is a fine dram as well.

You'll hear Glenlivet and Glenfiddich a lot becaus people see it around more frequently. Common isn't necessarily the best.
