The expression "To play God" means that you are acting like you have the power to do anything, like God does. But just because God has the power to do whatever He wants, He prefers to sit back and wait to see what choices you make... it is called freewill.

God has given you free will to do whatever you want to do in life. God is not a control freak. God is loving, caring and awesome.

If God is a control freak, you would not have a) so many different religions b) "evil" not necessarily punished and "good" rewarded.
What you are describing is not God but people using the name of the Lord thy God in vain!
People use that because it gives them credibility especially to those that are vulnerable e.g. the sick, the aged and the poor. It is up to those who are gifted to expose charlatans.

God wants us to guide ourselves. God created us so that we can make choices. If a someone wants to control you, then it is because that that person made the decision to try to control people.
No one can destroy the agency of man. It is our heavenly fathers plan the we all have opposition in life and the knowledge to choose right from wrong.
Even if you are controlled by a man who chooses to control, you still have your agency in life to choose how you will react.

If some one is trying to control somebody else, that person is being influenced by the Devil.
GOD gave us a FreeWill and will not go against it, and People who are Led of GOD will not try to control your FreeWill.
