Unless you are of the opposite sex, Muslims have no restriction about shaking hands of the same sex.

As regards women shaking hands, actually the same does hold true for the men in Islam as well.... You see a man can shake hands and a woman can shake hands, but only with members of the same sex, except for brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, close relatives and so on. This is not really that strange. The concept here is one of modesty.

unless a Muslim man was on Wodo' then h should shake hands with women and vise versa.
if a man or a woman are on wodo' ( cleaning ritual by water required before each prayer) getting in any physical contact with the opposite sex (including hand shakes) will ruin this wodo' and a person can not pray unless they redo it.
if water is convenient then i dont see any reason for not shaking hands, but if there's no water available where they are, they tend to try to stay ready for prayer for the longest time possible.
don't take it personally though. it's not meant to offend you.

Maybe it's cultural and not religious. Islam is a major religion in a lot of cultures. Maybe they are from some place where they just don't shake hands.
Be glad the other team didn't ask what they DO shake!

It is purely western culture. the eastern culture either Muslim,Hindu,Buddha, all are teaching about the "Vibration of Thoughts " both negative and positive are part of our bodies. Hands have the most opportunity the executive the thoughts. So, by way of hands "Vibration" will unnecessarily gets into other physical body which may spoil the positive mind set. . SO to keep Positive Sp ritual Vibration, they avoid hand shaking.

Shaking hands is highly recommended practice, specaially for Muslims. Islam encourages this. I have no idea about what you saw.

i have spent many tours in iraq since 1990. the muslem men that i met would shake hands with those they respected and would also touch above their heart and bless you, in the name of Allah.
i imagine the "no handshake" was to upset and unnerve the competition. something that i would do. its called pyschological operations (psyops) in the military world.

Well...it seems to be against their religion, just as eating meat that isn't kosher is against the Jewish religion. Religions tend to prescribe and some people are willing to take these prescription seriously.
Muslims are not against embracing each other, which - not so long ago - was frowned upon in the West as a sign of homosexuality.
