I recommend reading his speech, at least skimming it. The speech was basically about the role of reason in shaping theology throughout history and right now. In it, he quoted a 14th Century Christian emporer who, while debating a Persian "addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached". The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable."
The pope didn't say he agreed with this view of Mohammed; he used it as an example of the idea that reason is essential in matters of faith.
I think that a few demagogues within Islam are simply looking for situations they can exploit to cause rioting and anti-western activity among the muslim masses.

Because a "faithful murderer" is on the extreme fringe of Islam. ALL MUSLIM SCHOLARS condemn terrorism and say suicide is forbidden as well as killing civilians. the Pope is not an extremist.. HE HAS A HIGH POST.... The highest post in the whole Catholic world. He should be responsible and smart about things. Ahmedinejad of Iran got toasted for questioning the Holocaust (and I agree, he was very wrong and he should be protested against). Like Ahmedinejad's, the Pope speech really was innacurate and wrong FACTUALLY as well as what it was implying. Its discouraging to see such "pseudo religious study" coming from the head of the Catholic Church.

The Pope quoted the words of an emperor of Constantinople who said to a Persian (Iranian) Muslim that the Prophet of Islam brought nothing but evil and indecency to the World.
This Pope also eliminated the Office of mediation between religions, and sent its chief to Egypt as an Ambassador of the Vatican.
Unlike Pope John Paul II, this pope it seems, does not believe in reconciliation with other faiths and believes Catholics should assert that they represent the only true faith in the World and there is no other access to God except through the Church, which is his underlying thesis.

He said that the use of violence to promote religion is evil and that Islam has historically had a tendency to use violence to promote itself.
To protest his statement, Muslims have already firebombed at least 7 churches and gunned down an elderly Catholic nun in Somalia, which just proves that the pope was right.

The Pope quoted a christian emperor that said the Islamic religion sort of could not be a religion if it promoted killing people. Something on that line. Look up the news on the Drudgereport.com and some other news sites. They are all over the internet.

I seem to keep hearing the Crusades all over yahoo answers, that seems to be atheists main point of argument. But the crusades are over, and I wasn't involved with them. But what the pope talked about isn't over. When a Muslim leader says that they are going to cleans the world of all Christians and Jews, we dint respond by killing Muslim priests, or at least it doesn't make news.

He quoted an article that was written several hundred years ago saying that that Islam spread out over Europe because the Prophet Muhammad used violence and the sword to do it.

He said our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had brought the world "evil and inhuman" things. But he already apologized so the case is closed.
