Around my parts (IL), all residences have a phone box attached to the outside of the residence; it's where the phone line comes into the house. If you have one, it should be labeled with the name of your phone company. The purpose of the box is that it has a cover that can be opened, and inside there is a clip that has the phone line pressed into the socket (receptacle.) The entire thing is designed to plug your telephone directly into this receptacle in the event that you have no dial tone inside the house. If you get a dial tone at this outside box, then the problem is inside your home; if you don't get a dial tone, then the problem is with the phone company's line before it gets to your house.

Whew! Hope that helps somewhat.

Well if you are calling your self off of your own phone of course you are going to get a busy signal. If you have no dial tone, but you are connected to the internet maybe you need to disconnect from the internet.

Is there a phone off the hook somewhere? Try unplugging your answer machine. If you still can't get a dialtone, call the phone co to check out the lines. Sometimes the lines get jammed open in the phone system, and they can fix it without even coming out.

Your modem is malfunctioned. Lightning has finished your modem.
The same problem occured to me. The only way is to buy a new modem. I hope this will solve the problem. I enjoyed answering your question.

Try wiggling the connection from the phone line to the earpiece and the unit. Push them in as far as they can go.

not true. If you pay your bill, something could be wrong. Or another phone somewhere in the house is off the hook.
