Someone asked me if I wanted their teapot, so I took it -- it's got some rust in it, so I don't know if it's safe to use, or if there's an easy way to get rid of the rust.

I don't think the rust would taste so good! Anything you make in this vessel is going to taste like rust. There is a substance you can buy in the hardware store called CLR, but I dont know how effective it is. There is also "Naval Jelly" that removes rust, but how safe it is or effective, I wouldn't trust it.
Just use the teapot for decorative purposes, put a plant in it or throw it out. That's the safest solution. Don't risk poisoning yourself over a silly teapot.

The clr might work, don't ever use vinegars or bleach...the acidity will cause the rust to keep eating through the metal even faster. Try a paste of baking soda and water before you buy the clr.... If it is really pretty and you cant get rid of the rust, just leave the top open or off and turn it into a vase for some cut flowers, or store different flavored tea bags in it. good luck.

No offense meant...ew. I would probably not chance it. There are chemicals to remove the rust (CLR) but I don't think I'd want to use it for it's intended purpose after I had put those chemicals in it.
Or, if you should decide to remove the rust and try using it, watch for leaks...the rust may be deeper than just on the surface. Why did the other person give it to you?

Rust is not healthy and i would try to avoid it if I was you but if you had no choice but to use it there are alot of chemicals out there that clean rust Ijust cant think of any now. if it was my teapot I would just throw it away to be on the safe side.

Simply: yes it's bad. Either get a new stainless one, or better yet a porcelain one (not much more money)
There is no way to fix rust, b/c it will come back where the material has been compromised. Don't drink out of that thing.

Fill kettle with white household vinegar. Let stand one hour then gently rinse with warm water. If this doesn't work. Try CLR. a product you can find in the grocery stores by the cleaning products. Use plastic gloves. Fill and swish around. It may take a few applications. When clean. Dry well and fill with black and white newsprint for about one week to help it stay clean and odor free

unless you want to drink rust... yea it is a bad idea... if you tried to soak it in viniger... that might take the rust out... i'm not sure... it takes bulid up off of shower heads so... it might work on teh rust.. and its worth a try... if that doesn't work, get an SOS pad and clean it with that... that will take it off...
