Wow.......there is so much to do in California. You could go up 101 to Santa Barbara, take a walk out on Stearns Wharf, go take a tour at the Santa Barbara Mission. There is alot of shopping on State Street. Plus you have the whole beach area on Cabrillo Blvd. You could continue up 101 to El Capitan State Beach and Campground and camp out for a few days. The campground is really pretty and is right above the beach. You could then continue up 101 to the 254 and go into Solvang and do some shopping and have a nice meal at one of the restaurants. If I were you, I would eat at "The Solvang Restaurant". The owners name is Jeff Paske and he does alot of business with the Vistors Center and he was on the "Road Trip with Huell Howser' a couple of years ago. I think he would be a good person to talk to. The Santa Ines Mission, The elverhoy museum and the Bethania Lutheran Church is also wonderful to see.
Now if you wanted to go to Northern California...you could go to Lake Tahoe. The hotels there are really nice..you can drive all the way around the lake in just about an hour to an hour and a half. You can take the boat tour around the lake and that is on a paddle wheel boat and that is really fun. Squaw Valley is not to far from Lake Tahoe..you could take the tram up the mountain up to the cafe and have lunch up there and look out at Lake Tahoe.
If you wanted to go to Southern California...I would say go to San Diego. You can camp out on Mission Bay or stay in one of the real nice hotels. Down there you can go to Seaport Village to do some shopping, go to Old Town, take a Harbor Cruise, Go over to Coronado Island and walk through the Coronado Hotel and then walk along the beach. Plus you have Seaworld and Lego Land down there.
The possibilities in California are endless!!!!! Whatver you decide to do......have a great vacation!!!!!

Southern California is a great launching point for all sorts of adventures. Lots of possible ways you can go about this:
By Car:
I-5 upto Oregon (15 hours to Portland). I-15 east to Las Vegas (4 hours). PCH along the coast upto to San Francisco (9 hours). I-5/I-80 east to the Lake Tahoe and Reno area (7 hours). Or cross the border into Baja California, Mexico (right next door).
By Plane:
Relatively short flights to...Mazatlan, PV, Mexico City, Denver, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Seattle, Vancouver

Lake Tahoe is a nice area for a vacation. There are lots of things to do, including gambling. Laughlin is a mini-Las Vegas/Lake Tahoe. It's a nice place to go for a vacation. A few more hours away from Laughlin and you can see the Grand Canyons.
It really depends on what part of California you live in (Northern, Central or Southern) in regards to where is the best place to go for a vacation.
Good luck with your decision and have a blast! :)

Drive up the coast.
Not sure where you are starting from, but you can go from San Diego to Oregon on Highway 1 and 101. The scenery from Cambria to Carmel is breathtaking, the stretch from Stinson Beach to Ft Bragg is equally spectacular, the drive through the redwoods from Liggett to Eureka is awe-inspiring, and the coast from Eureka to the Oregon border is just as good as the southern and central coast.
Then cross over to the Siskyou mountains into the Central Valley and head south along the Sacramento River and Valley past the Trinity Alps, Mt Shasta, Shasta Dam and into Sacramento.

Colorado is a good days drive away, but worth the time, and so beautiful. If you want a change of pace, try it.
