Primary research involves things like letters and first hand accounts, i.e. a manuscript collection would be a primary source. A secondary source is something like a book written about the subject.
Ex.
A letter written to Churchill from FDR about the Yalta conference would be a primary source.
A book written about Churchill and FDR and their reactions to Yalta would be a secondary source.
