Pioneer is a great name in audio and visual electronics. LG is newer to the game and has been trying to improve their image across the bored. I don't work for them, but i work with a number of their product and they've improved. LG however are no Pioneer. Pioneer is a safe bet, and has better picture quality and so probably quite a bit more expensive. LG will be less expensive, and though they aren't crap, they are a greater risk.

I would recommend the pioneer. They have been in the plasma business for a bit longer. They're picture quality is better than most tvs. Pioneer is also a very reliable brand. Pioneer has been making dvd players, surround sound for a lot longer than lg has. Pioneer electronics are also a lot more "user friendly". The menus are easier to navigate and everything follows a logical pattern.

If you watch multiple rented movies on DVD very often, I'd go with the 5 disc changer. If you only rent 2-3 movies a month, I'd go with the single DVD.
Also, just beware of Plasma TV's. They are nice and all, but the plasma gas burns very hot and burns up in about 5 years, give or take. That's alot of money to put out for such a short life tv. LCD tv's last much longer and have just as nice, if not better, of a picture.

Ive seen the Pioneer not the LG 50 inch, but one thing you have to remember is this there are 2 new DVD formats coming out Blu Ray and hd DVD, although i believe Blu Ray will win the deal, you must make sure that the DVD players u already chosen up converts your DVD to hd DVD quality or it will all be in vain, you'll have a nice TV but still standard pic

check that out then compare TVs side by side for best picture color response, purest blacks and washout
Plan to spend a little more for a better surround sound a component set up is much better than a in a box surround sound system, you dont have to go crazy but you can get a decent set up from 1,500 to 2,000 check it out and enjoy

lg... the pioneer is a very good plasma but the lg has some features that the pionner will not have.. it has magic eye technology which will automatically adjust contrast and brightness for the changing lighting conditions in the room and it has orbiter and white wash which will help to control or eliminate burn-in on your plasama screen. plus the extra money you save on the lg will help you to upgrade to a better surround sound setup

I like LG because they don't have those crappy boxes that go along with the TV in order to use it like Pioneer has. Do you understand what I am saying at least? If not, I'm losing you because I don't know what they are for but you need the box to run the TV.
And LG is an alright brand. I like the picture.

I'd go with LG.. better quality imo.. also i like the single dvd players.. as the multi changers tend to break down real fast in my experience.
good luck with whatever you choose though.
