I have a female boxer. She has been spayed. Can my husband and I make her become a gaurd dog? We don't know if boxers can have aggressive tendencies or not. Can they?

Boxers are not usually aggressive, they're actually very sweet. They can be very defensive of their family...I had one like that, but the one I have now isn't really that brave. It all depends on the personality...but don't intentionally train your dog to be aggressive, reward her if she protects you or barks when someone comes to your house, but don't make her overly aggressive because that can lead to major problems.

You should never obtain a dog desiring it become aggressive. Your boxer's personality and disposition are pretty well set by this time in her life, and there isn't much you can do to change it. Short of aggression towards her on your part, she will choose to follow her normal activities. If you want a guard for protection, I suggest you buy a home security system. A dog with some aggressive tendencies, especially one prone to defending it's owner against all others, is not a dog you want around other people who just happen to come to your door.

Why would you want to make her aggressive? Being a good guard dog has nothing to do with aggression at all.

Deciding to protection train your family dog is a decision you need to consider very carefully. A guard dog can not run free in parks like many companion dogs, go for any walks off-leash, or ever be left unattended with children, even your own. You may find that you lose out on a lot of the fun of having a dog, in order to have it guard trained. Protection training involves bringing out a dogÕs natural aggression, confidence, and possessiveness.

If not done carefully and properly, with necessary precautions taken, it can have serious repercussions. You must understand that you may be creating a potentially deadly weapon, and be ready to accept the risks that accompany this decision. If you have seriously done your research and are sure that a guard dog is what you want, you will need to seek the help of an experienced protection dog trainer to work with you and your dog through every step of your training.

Guard training is very complex and requires involving a number of different handlers. You and your dog will be working together as a team, never against each other, and the handlers assisting you should be unfamiliar to your dog. You need to be sure that you have developed a strong relationship of trust and control (through obedience training) before you start, and that your dog is at least one year old. You will need to find a school that uses only non-abusive methods, using no pain or fear for the dog. Otherwise you may do more damage than good, and end up with an unpredictable time bomb. For the safety and well-being of your person, the dog, and your family I would strongly encourage you only to pursue this with the assistance of an experienced guard dog trainer.

You do not need to make her aggressive to be a good guard dog. Most dogs, Boxers included make great guard dogs by nature. It is just in their inate instincts to protect their property and their people. But yes, any dog can be made aggressive if they are mistreated enough. Please contact a professional trainer in your area and do not attempt this yourself since you obviously don't have a clue about proper training, handling, and behavior techniques.
