I also heard that peroxide/water helps, if not try one benadryl. alot of over the counter canker treatment medications contain diphenhydramine which is the main ingredient in benadryl.

Try some tea...
Place a large pinch of tea leaves (from inside a regular tea bag) on the canker sore and hold it there. This is much easier when the canker sore is up around the gums and not mid-cheek, but if it is mid-cheek, you can always simply leave the teabag intact and use the whole thing.
The tannic acid in the tea will reduce the canker sore.
In the future, if you feel one coming on, I've found Listerine helps keep them away - or at least much smaller than if left alone

Abreva, Releev, and a few other OTC products work. You can save a lot of money and put some alcohol on a Q-tip and rub the surface as hard as you can stand it for a few seconds. HURTS LIKE HECK, but this is pretty much the same as the $10-20 products mentioned above. You might also want to get some OraJel or other benzocaine 20% product. Rub that one the sore first and after a couple of minutes, do the alcohol rub. You can also apply some benzocaine before a meal if it really hurts to eat.

Coldness. Salt and water will probably make it worse.
I get them all the time. So I will say get some canker sore medicine from any store, such as Wal*Mart. I have something made by oral-B. Basically, make sure it has a protective coating and make sure that it numbs the pain, which most do.
In reality, canker sores just have to run their course. The 'medication' just basically helps deal with it.

Use hydrogen peroxide diluted with a bit of water. It will sting like hell but you'll get rid of it in a few days. Take vitamin C. Now this final thing sounds really gross but it does work. Put some ear wax in the canker it will protect it till it goes away.

outside of your lip--place cold packs 5min on and 10min off. rinse with antacid such
as Maalox or mylanta or dab it on your lip with a swab.
avoid very hot, cold sweet food and drinks if they increase the pain. apply petroleum jelly such as Vaseline to ease the pain and cracking and dryness of the lip sore. use a protector like blistix. don't share your lip balm or protector with anyone cold sores or canker sores are contagious also apply Vite E to keep moist
the antacid helps to neutralize

You sure it isn't just a cranker sore? Leave it alone and eventually, like dog poop on yer shoe, it'll go away.
