You will need to take a pre-licensing course for a certain amount of hours depending on which line of insurance you are interested in. Then you will have to pass their school exam and then you have to pass your state exam. Some companies will sponsor you so you don't have to pay for it. You should work for a company that is willing to train you and when you get some knowledge in the field you should work on your own and go through a general agent. (You will make better commissions this way and the general agent does most of the work for you).
Just keep in mind that the pre-licensing course will not teach you much about the real world of insurance. They tell you on the first day, "You are not here to learn about insurance, you are here to pass a test!"

Call some local agents and some Insurance Comany Offices, and find out who's hiring.
You're going to be required to take some training and pass some insurance exams to be licensed to sell. (at least it's that way in Kansas)
You probably should expand your desires to more than just Auto, that would be a tough market, get a wider product line including Home, Auto, Life, Business Liability, and then you'll be off and rolling.

Call your local Independent Agent's office. They all offer licensing classes. Once you have a license they can often help you find work, as can posting your resume online and responding to ads. Probably you will need to start in an entry level position to learn your field. There is a lot to know in insurance, but is a great industry and you can really succeed if you know your stuff. I would recommend talking to an agent first. Even go as far as working in an office for an agent for a while if possible.
When I first got into the business, I managed a StateFarm office and I hated dealing with auto insurance! Its not for everyone.
I am glad I got my introduction into the business that way. I know a lot of people who jump right in, open an office without realizing the stress and crap associated with auto and homeowners and they end up regretting it.
You might like it though, try it.

You need to have a license to sell insurance (visit your state insurance department website to see licensing requirements) and a company that lets you sell their insurance (Progressive would be a good one).

First find a sponsoring company. Talk to differnt companies and find out where there district offices are and then go from there.
