So tomarrow at 3pm I am getting surgery to remove 4 teeth (the last 2 on the bottom on both sides) The very last tooth on each side were so bad that they broke away and I eventually pulled them both out. However, I didn't get the roots out so they are going to have to cut my gums open to remove them, as well as removing the tooth right next them. :( I am VERY scared... I have severe mental illnesses which make it even worse. When I went to the dentist a few weeks ago and found all this out, it was the first time I had been to a dentist in over 5 years.

I was told that I will be getting general anesthia, and that I couldn't eat or drink anything for 4 hours prior to my appointment. But I am going to need to take my(perscription)Xanax in order for me to actually get there and not freak out.Is it ok to take it before the surgery?

What should I expect when I get there? Is he going to want to touch my teeth before I get knocked out? What's going to happen when he's done? Will I wake up rite away?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Just relax.....and let the Dentist do his job. He'll numb you up and you'll be fine.

First off if you're getting general anesthia you are not getting knocked out. You're getting numbed. Like with Novocaine. Listen sweetheart, I'm the biggest wussy there is when it comes to seeing the dentist. And I tremble at the thought of having teeth yanked. I've had 9 pulled so far. When I stop and think about it, having those teeth yanked really didn't hurt at all, after they numbed me out. It was the thought of having them yanked that was bothering me. So don't be so scared. Just tell the dentist to give you a double dose of numb and relax. It really isn't that bad at all. And if you do take your other meds make sure you tell the dentist because some meds mixed can have fatal reactions. Now be a big girl when you go to the dentist tomorrow. And maybe you'll get a lollipop.

I had two teeth puled three weeks ago. They should have been pulled over two years ago, but I was so scared, I waited until I couldn't take the pain anymore. I have mental illness too, and that made things almost unbearable. I was up all night, and you probably will be, too. I close my eyes for the numbing shot, and make sure you tell your dentist how scared you are. It will be over before you know it, and the anxiety you're going through now is way worse than actually getting your teeth pulled. If the dentist offers you gas, take it. I hear it really relaxes you, though I never had it. Make sure he gives you a prescription for pain medicine, or tells you what over-the-counter stuff to take. Do you have a favorite song? Keep singing it to yourself, tomorrow will be here and gone before you know it.

Oh honey... It's really not as bad as you think. I hadn't gone to the dentist in over 8 years and when I went I had to have two teeth pulled. If they give you enough medicine you won't even feel it and then they will give you pain killers so you will pretty much feel very little pain while it's healing.

Hang in there, it'll be ok. Just try not to focus on it too much. You'll be alright, I promise. :-)

The most awkward thing about it is hearing all the noises of your teeth being ripped from your gums and not feeling a thing. It's kind of funny actually. And I despise the dentist.

Relax, it really will be O.K. I had to have this done some years ago I ended up with a few stitches, I was terrified of the dentist, but it was all right. You can take the Xanax 4 hours before the appointment it lasts for four hours. I would take it at 9 so it can be wearing off at your appointment. The Dentist probably will not touch your teeth untill you are given something, you go to sleep so fast and you really wake up pretty quickly although groggy, as far as the "cutting" it is so small if they didn't tell you, you would never know. Follow your Dentist instructions for at home care and you will be fine. Good luck.

I had several of these and I don't fear them because they have always been very good with this and know that people don't like pain and are afraid of dentists. A man can always be a dog. As a kid I like a dental assistant and got her to hold my hand while getting dental work.

Don't be scared, think positive, really, do not focus on nervousness or negative feelings, just know you are going to be okay, in the chair, you have to psych yourself up for it, do that now, the anesthesia is strong, I've had broken molars removed and though it may seem painful and difficult to deal with, it was a piece of cake, nothing bad,

Just close your eyes and pray before going. You'll be just fine

Find another dentist, they shouldn't have to cut your gums open, a good dentist should be able to do it the regular way.

i feel you. i have more than my fair share of mental illnesses including anxiety. i porbly have to get my wisdom teeth pulled but i refuse to let that happen. you should go because its been so long since you went. think about it like this, what you did (pulling them yourself and them growing back) will be more painful then wisdom teeth extraction. i personally dont have a problem with the pain, its just blood and me not being conscience with other people in the room. if that is the case for you. get medicince to put you out (you wont see the blood) and if its that you dont trust the doctors have your mom or osmeone you know well there with you. how it goes well. im told it doesnt hurt and it isnt a big deal. thinking about it always brings me to tears though.

relax... the dentist knows what he is doing. first of all they give you a shot and you go to sleep. they give you enough of the dose to keep you sleep throughout the surgery. for the first day you won't feel good and might throw up. but after that everything well be fine. Those are proffesianilist and know what they're doing. After all it is there job. But dont' forget to relax, nothing bad is gonna happen. Think of it this way. It just is making you be healthier and you can't be healthier if you stress out a lot. Good luck and hope everything turns out ok:)

Relax, I have had two of my teeth pulled out and they had to cut my gums to bring out the teeth above them, then they put chains on those exposed teeth to bring them down. The actual surgery part didn't bother me. They gave me an IV which i thought was going to hurt but actually didn't, and they gave me another shot to make me drowsy and some gas to make me sleepy, I wasn't actually put to sleep but it felt like it. The pain only came when I went home and tried to talk. My mouth was so sore! The only thing I could eat was applesauce. Don't worry becasue my doctor presribed me painkillers that helped. But the surgery is no problem. I hope all goes well.
