i don't think it's improper at all. if i want to stand in the corner all alone i will. and if that's what you feel like doing. you should do it.

Not that it is improper it is more sad to me. How much fun can standing in the corner watching everyone else mingling and talking together? I would ask myself what the problem is? Are you extremely shy or do you feel that you have nothing to add to the conversation? Shyness and feeling inadequate are things you can work on. Start out in little effort to be just outside your comfort zone and move out a bit in each attempt. If that doesn't work then I would look into professional help. All that said if you enjoy doing the corner thing then have at it. Good Luck..

This isn't exactly a question about etiquette, but rather about a situation that leaves you out of the loop. When people are interacting with each other, unless it is all couples, there is usually room in a group for one more. Just stand nearby, listen for a bit, then add a comment. No one is going to toss you out, or you wouldn't have been there in the first place. An attentive host makes sure all his or her guests are included, but you have to take action yourself, otherwise you're in for a very dull time of it.

I don't consider that bad etiquette. If for some reason you want to stay alone in the corner and observe rather than participate that's fine.

The proper etiquette would be to simply not attend the function where you would feel that you need to stand in the corner.
If you have generalized social anxiety disorder or just low self es time, you should just take small steps toward conquering your fears or inadequacies before allowing yourself to be in that situation.
Good luck!

i dont think its improper....because some people like to observe rather than to migle and there is nothing wrong with that...unless if you know most of the people in the room...that would be improper...

Try to pick someone who is in the same boat and give each other support.
