What version of MS-Word do you use? Lower version can't open those new versions. Only newer version can open the old one..

Word 97 or word 2003? Please don't assume that we all know which version you have. I am still using word 97 as I have two OS on my computer and this is the only version compatible with Win 98 SE as well as XP
The problem you describe is file association and you may have save files from a different version of word which can only be opened by that or later versions but never the earlier versions to the one that saved it. Uninstall word and re install it should cure this, if not then install word 2003.(Presuming that you haven't got this version)

It sounds like you worked in a "New Word Document" but did not save it to a file.
The first time you save a file, you are presented the "save AS" window. You must tell the computer where to save, give the file a name, and (near the bottom) indicate the type (in this case, a Word doc).
When you want to reopen the file, go to the directory/folder you saved it in, and double-cl the file to open.
Make your revisions. If you click File, Save as you go along, your edits will be saved and you can continue working in the file. When finished, cl File, cl Close.

Yes it asks you where you want to save the document. Click on the drop down menu and choose where you want to save it too.

you've messed up your word file associations somehow.
uninstall word then reinstalling should fix it without losing your files.
