I fully agree, it should have been done years ago.
I like all people, any race if they are decent
but why change Australia into all different little groups
We will lose who we are. All countries should do like wise to keep them all unique.
good on ya Howard !!

I agree that migrants should learn the language of the country they are moving to. I know the Foreign Affairs Department in Australia hold language lessons for officers being posted to another country and their spouses are also invited. I have spoken on the phone (work related) with people from other countries who really can't speak English and I have found it very difficult to understand them and in some cases have had to terminate the conversation. The most dangerous place this occurred was at a hospital where they could not explain what their health problem was. Surely migrants want good health care but how can they get it if they can't converse with the medical staff. I hope the Australian Government does not back down on this.

I don't mind listening to everybody speaking a different language, I find this to be part of Australia's ecclectic ethnic mix that makes us the great country we are BUT if you move to another country to make it your home and your livelihood common sense prevails that you need to know the language!
You should be able to read, write and speak English at at least an intermediate level. I would do the same thing if I was moving to another country where English was not the spoken language - why would I not - it doesn't mean I am losing my sense of idenity or culture?!
To integrate successfully this is a mandatory requirement. This has nothing to do with racism - just simple common sense.

I say, if you're going to live in another country even on a temporary basis you should learn to read and write the their language so that you can communicate with them and read the signs. It really pisses me off when I'm driving behind somebody, who is from another country (usually mexico) and they are driving so damn slow because they can't read the signs.
I don't have anything against Mexicans (or forigeners), I have Mexican neighbors on each side of me and I get along with them very well. I just think they need to learn the language to be able to communicate better; that's all!

I totally agree with the Australian Goverment, I think that if you are wanting to move, live and then ask for citizenship in another country then you definatly should embrace this countries culture & language, Really why would you want to move somewhere if you are not willing to accept another countries way of life?? I'm not saying completly disregard your own background and beliefs, but please understand the country's that you are migrating into and take them on board in everyday life.. If I was to move to Japan and live for instance I would definalty learn the language and learn about the history and ceramonies that they have and take them on board in my everyday life, I wouldn't get offended either by it either I do really belive that if you want to migrate and get citizenship then as the saying goes "when in rome, do as the romans do!"

Wonderful idea, and should be implemented immediaely. When people are allowed to migrate to any country, they should uphold the laws and customs of the host nation.Regardles of thier race or religion the laws of the land come first and foremost. This should be a requirement, before migration. Also they should get no social benefits until they are naturalised.Accept the laws of the land or stay away

Yes, They are correct. If you move to another country to live, learn the language! The USA needs to make English the National Language! It doesn't make to much sense to me to live in a country where you can't communicate with anyone, except your relatives.

I do think that if people are expecting to live in a country, then they should make an effort to learn the language. Testing them is a good idea.

I don't know - would you fail for posing the question as "a English Test" instead of "an English test"???
Is good grammar equal to patriotism?
Is poor or failing English skill an indicator of potential treachery?
Worse yet, does this mean Australia deports Aboriginals if they still don't speak English?
I think the bank account should speak for itself... if you don't speak English but you've got enough cash to make a go of it then you should be allowed in.

you gotta learn the language the country speaks. and thats not racisim. i am not an australian but a migrant to the country and i guess its very important to all of us to learn english.
I am not saying that we forget our customs and culture, but atleast learn the language to express our selves clearly to our new friends and understand them as well.
