The Native Americans wouldn't be nearly all dead.

For primitive people, the Amerinds were surprisingly advanced.

For example, the Incas had the wheel. Why didn't they use it? Because they were in a mountainous region, not on the plains! How do we know they had the wheel...? Because we have found toy dogs and llamas made of clay, with little wheels attached to the feet. A child would pull it by a string. They had no other use for it.

You have heard of the smoke signals of the indians in the American southwest. Some people think that they also could flash sun signals with the only permanent (not ice) natural material that was sufficiently flat enough to be reflective: sheets of mica. Imagine how much more advanced they would have been than the Europeans, if only -- their language had been alphabetic. Rapid communications leads to commerce, which leads to trade and prosperity which decreases tribal warfare. They could potentially have eventually developed a unified culture.

The indians of the pacific nothwest worked metal. They did not know smelting, but they worked native copper nuggets by pounding them. If the copper had been a bit more plentiful, or if they had built cooking or home heating hearths of chunks of the ore, they would have found a new way to work it.

These are just a few examples. I feel confident that the indians of the East Coast (who were shoved out of everywhere else by population pressure and tribal frictions) would eventually have discovered Europe.

If we imagine for a few moments that Europe didn't exist, then I imagine that eventually another civilisation would have grown and become another Europe, and then overrun America just like the Europeans did! My best guess would be that Asia or India would become what Europe did.

My theory is that it is based on climate. In a climate where agriculture is difficult, such as Africa or Australia, it would take much longer for agriculture to begin. Once agriculture begins, people start to have spare time, which they can use on art or technological development. If you are a hunter/gatherer, there is very little spare time so technology develops much slower.

I believe that given enough time, Native Americans could also have advanced to where Europe ended up, but Asian and India were much more "advanced" than the Native Americans, so I guess they would win the race.

The entire continent would probably be divided up into a collection of third world, despotic countries.

Europe would be an even more rat-infested stink-hole then it is today.
